This page is divided into the following sections:

There are also lots of additional resources available on pages within this section. These include details about the Environmental Education Centre and the schools recycling service.

Overview of the National Framework for Sustainable Schools

This framework introduces eight interlinking ‘doorways’ through which schools may choose to initiate or extend their sustainable school activity.

The eight doorways are as follows:

Food and Drink

Travel and Traffic

Purchasing and Waste

Global Citizenship

Local Well-Being

Energy and Water

Building and Grounds

Inclusion and Participation

Each doorway may be approached individually or as part of a 'whole school' development programme. The doorways are inter-connected, and schools will find that by passing through one doorway, they will inevitably start to engage with the themes from another doorway.

The Sustainable Schools framework invites schools to develop an agenda for care: care for oneself, care for each other, and care for the global community. This is encouraged through the “3 Cs” concept of engagement: Curriculum, Campus and Community.

Using the S3 self-evaluation form, schools can focus on how sustainable development can be embedded into whole-school management practices. The S3 planning guide provides practical guidance to help schools operate in a more sustainable way.

Eco-Schools

Eco-SchoolsParticipation in the international Eco-Schools Award guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing an action framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life; and enabling schools to work towards attaining Eco-Schools Green Flag Status.

It is likely that your school is already doing enough environmental activities to be well on your way to gaining an award. It’s free to join, so why not sign up and gain some recognition for your work! Many schools in Haringey are already taking part and we currently have 26 bronze award winners, 8 silver, and the borough has its first Green Flag school!
