Choice of area

The exact area was chosen because of its proximity to community buildings and Muswell Hill Broadway. It also contained a good mixture of housing types, some of which are within conservation areas, giving the Muswell Hill project an additional area of interest.

The area is on a south facing slope, which increases the potential for solar photovoltaic arrays that can be used to generate renewable energy.

Size of the zone

In setting up the Low Carbon Zones initiative, the Mayor of London asked boroughs to adopt an area-based, 'whole-house' approach covering a range of types of buildings. However, each Low Carbon Zone was limited to no more than 1,000 buildings in total, which means that the Muswell Hill zone is relatively small.

Aside from the residential properties that make up most of the Muswell Hill Low Carbon Zone, the other buildings in the zone are businesses or publicly owned, including Muswell Hill Library and Muswell Hill Primary School.

The aim of the pilot is to test approaches to reducing carbon emissions which can be rolled out to the rest of the borough and across England at a later stage.

Outside the zone

The majority of the Muswell Hill Low Carbon Zone project will involve schemes and initiatives inside the zone.

However, the three schools where solar photovoltaic panels will be installed are actually outside the zone:

  • Rhodes Avenue Primary School
  • Fortismere Secondary School
  • Alexandra Park Secondary School

Perhaps most importantly, the knowledge and experience that will be gained through the Muswell Hill Low Carbon Zone project will be used outside the zone, both within Haringey and elsewhere in the country to achieve widespread reductions in carbon emissions.
