Projects and Schemes

This page gives an overview of the various projects, schemes and initiatives that make up the Muswell Hill Low Carbon Zone project.
Home energy efficiency
One of the most important parts of the scheme is a programme of home efficiency measures, including home energy audits to help identify improvements that could be made, and subsidies to help householders install insulation and draft proofing.
A team of volunteers has been recruited to go door-to-door in the Low Carbon Zone to talk to residents about the subsidised efficiency measures that are available through the scheme, and also pass on some top tips about how to save energy at home.
Low Carbon Loans
Low interest loans are available to homeowners in the Zone to help with the cost of installing larger energy saving measures, such as insulation, heating up-grades, wood burning stoves, double glazing, solar panels or to even carry out a whole house eco-retrofit. For more information see the Low Carbon Loan leaflet in the attached files section below.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels
Solar PV panels have been installed on the following three schools:
- Rhodes Avenue Primary School
- Fortismere Secondary School
- Alexandra Park Secondary School
For more information visit the solar panels at schools page.
In addition, solar PV panels will be installed by en10ergy at other locations, including the roof of Marks and Spencer on Muswell Hill Broadway.

Discounted Green Energy Tarrifs
Discounts on green energy tariffs from Good Energy, Ecotricity and Green Energy UK are available to residents and businesses in the Muswell Hill Low Carbon Zone. For more information visit the Haringey 40:20 website (external link).
LivingArk
The LivingArk is a demonstration zero-carbon community building that is under construction at Muswell Hill Primary School.
The LivingArk features a green roof, lighting powered by a solar panel, composting toilet and a number of other environmentally-friendly measures. For more information visit the LivingARK page.
Greening community buildings
Work will be carried out at local community buildings to reduce energy consumption. A new more efficient lighting system has already been installed at Muswell Hill Library, and more efficient heating systems will be put in at the Muswell Hill Centre.
Green business audits
Free green business audits are available to small businesses in the Low Carbon Zone. These audits provide businesses with advice on how to cut their energy use and carbon emission, as well as other green business issues such as reducing water use, recycling and reducing waste and writing an environmental. Some businesses which have had an audit have already reduced their energy use by 30%!
Sustainable travel
To promote more sustainable travel options, the Muswell Hill Low Carbon Zone project has provided new cyclehoops on Muswell Hill Broadway and other locations, an electric car charging point in Summerland Grange Car Park, and new Streetcar car club parking bays.
Promotion and education
To complement the projects listed above, Haringey Council and its community partners will be promoting sustainable lifestyles to residents, carrying out education programmes in local schools, and engaging with businesses in Muswell Hill to achieve additional carbon savings.
