Disposing of Household Waste
Since November 2005 all householders in England have had a legal responsibility to ensure that all of their rubbish and waste is disposed of properly.
The Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991 (as amended), require all householders to make sure their waste is only removed from their premises by registered waste carriers. Householders not taking reasonable measures to do so could face fines of up to £5000.
In Haringey most household waste is collected by Haringey Enterprise (formerly Haringey Accord), which is a registered waste carrier. But some householders may choose to use a different waste carrier.
If you are using a waste carrier other than Haringey Enterprise to remove household, garden or construction waste you can check they are registered by calling the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506 and requesting an instant waste carrier validation check or you can visit the Environment Agency's online register. See the external links section below.
If you want to use a waste carrier other than Haringey Enterprise think first whether the contractor you are using caters for:
- All building and allied trades
- House clearances
- Retail establishments
- Scrap metal dealers
Always ask for their waste carrier number and if in doubt check their details with the Environment Agency. Remember it is you that could face a fine of up to £5000.
Bogus refuse collectors have been working in the area, knocking on doors claiming to be employees of the council's waste contractor Haringey Enterprise. Haringey Enterprise is not permitted to directly approach residents to arrange for the removal of waste in this way. Residents approached in this way should decline any request for removal of waste and report the matter to Haringey Council on 020 8489 5655.
Remember: Householders can dispose of their own household waste at Haringey Council's reuse and recycling centres free of charge. If you are unable to take bulky items to one of the centres, Haringey Enterprise - 020 8885 7700 can collect and dispose of these items for a fee.
