Better Haringey Awards 2008

Welcome

The prestigious Better Haringey Awards 2008 will take place this summer as part of the exciting new Better Haringey Green Fair. The awards will take place on the evening of Thursday 5 June.

The categories

The awards celebrate the achievements of the many groups and individuals that contribute to making a cleaner, greener and safer Haringey.

This year we have six categories. See who's been shortlisted for them on the Better Haringey Awards 2008 Shortlist page.

Sustainable School

This award is aimed at all junior, secondary, and other learning settings in the borough for young people. We will be looking for strong examples of a joined up approach to tackle the school’s impact on the environment, with evidence of improvement across the school’s curriculum and campus, and in its relationship with the local community.

Greenest Public Sector Office

This award is open to Haringey Council staff, and our partners in the public sector including the Police, Fire, NHS, Mental Health Trust and other local public sector agencies. Submissions from large office buildings should be submitted by floor or team, but smaller office accommodation such as area offices can submit a single application.

We will be looking for evidence of creative (and possibly fun) ways used to encourage staff to think about and change the way they use resources in the workplace. Examples might include setting up systems for re-using scrap office paper, collecting food scraps for composting, ensuring appliances are switched off when not in use and effective awareness raising activities.

Safe and Sustainable Streets

Haringey’s Sustainable Community Strategy aims to ensure people are at the heart of change, ensure Haringey is safer for all, and that we secure an environmentally sustainable future. This award is open to all residents who live in the borough. Submissions may be submitted that recognise the contributions of groups, associations and individuals.

The judges will want to see examples where the community has led an initiative to improve their local environment for the benefit of the wider community. Examples might include an effective Neighbourhood Watch that is helping to tackle graffiti, fly-posting or dumped rubbish, helping vulnerable people and / or neighbours, a locally organised community clear up, gardening and planting activities, or awareness raising initiatives.

Greening your Home

This category is for all occupants of residential properties in Haringey. Judges will be looking for evidence of practical ideas and approaches used for improving the home in an environmentally sensitive way that reduces CO2 emissions. This could include:

  • Actions to reduce household waste.
  • Improvements to your garden that enhance biodiversity.
  • Energy saving measures that have reduced consumption and lightened energy bills.
  • Practical actions to save water and reduce water pollution.
  • Environmentally sound materials and practices used in DIY projects.

Sustainable Travel

This award is open to any sector, i.e. individuals, groups, organisations and businesses. We would like to hear about practical examples of safe, environmentally friendly methods of travel. This could include local car sharing, car clubs, walking buses, cycling initiatives, use of alternative fuels or other innovative ways to travel either individually or as a group where people feel safe and reduce their impact of travel on the environment.

Green Business

The award is open to all businesses and voluntary sector organisations in Haringey, (but excludes all public sector bodies as they have their own category). Applications would be particularly welcome from organisations whose core business is not necessarily related to sustainability, but who have embedded best practice into their organisation. Nominations should illustrate how the business has considered and reduced their environmental impact through its operational policies. Examples include an established scheme for recycling of waste, use of recycled, fairly traded or local produce, use of energy efficient appliances, sustainable travel or fleet arrangements, or BS14001 accreditation.
