Local Democracy Week in Haringey
13 - 17 October 2008
Local democracy week is promoted by the Local Government Association (LGA) as a way to try and raise awareness of Local Councils and the democratic process.
It is a national campaign and hundreds of Councils and thousands of schools participated.
As part of local democracy week Haringey’s councillors took part in numerous events across the borough.
In Haringey:
- 20 Councillors visited 23 schools - 18 primary schools, 3 special schools and 2 secondary schools.
- A number of councillors also took part in a stall in Wood Green library (see picture below) to promote the London Council’s campaign 'Be a Councillor'. You can visit the Be a Councillor website via the external links section below.

- The Mayor hosted a series of visits to the Council chamber from all ages, ranging from primary school children to Haringey’s pensioners. These visits were an intergral part of the Local Democracy Week programme, they encouraged the operation of schools' councils and young peoples understanding of the functions of local authorities. The visits also provided older people with an opportunity to question the Mayor on local issues in a social and informal setting.
- Haringey’s Young People attended a highly successful Young People’s Question Time. The event was webcast and the panel included the Leader of the Council, Lynne Featherstone MP and Joanne McCartney AM. The questions were challenging and well thought through, ranging from Ian Blair’s departure to the international credit crunch. The event defied anyone who suggests that young people don’t care about politics.
The week was highly successful and well attended throughout. We look forward to building on this success in promoting local democracy throughout the year.
