Civic Engagement

Get Involved in Civic Life in Haringey

The borough’s Strategic Partnership, made up of Haringey’s public agencies (NHS Trusts, the Police Service, Probation, the Council, Job Centre Plus, the Voluntary Sector etc) has agreed that one of its aims is to improve ‘civic engagement’.

This means encouraging people to get involved in local public agencies such as the Council, Police Service, Health services and the Courts and if appropriate apply for and take up public appointments. These could include the following civic roles:

  • Magistrates
  • Councillors
  • NHS Non-Executive Directors
  • Special Constables

In doing so, it is recognising that one of the main strengths in Haringey is its diversity, and that all communities can make a positive contribution to the borough by taking up public appointments.

People from across Haringey are already helping to shape the community in a variety of ways, through working as a school governor, a local magistrate, membership of a voluntary board and as a local Councillor. However, the continuing contribution of all of the different people in Haringey is important. The Strategic Partnership and Council are at the forefront of efforts to ensure that those who participate in public life are representative of the whole community.

London Councils, the body that represents all local authorities in London, is also running a campaign to attract new talented people to stand as councillors in the 2010 local elections in London, see external links section at the bottom of this page.

The main perceived barrier to people becoming more involved in public life is through a lack of information about how to do so.

Civic Engagement will be highlighted at events arranged by the Council and strategic partners.
