Haringey Council Race Equality Scheme

Promoting Race Equality

The Race Equality Scheme sets out how the Council will work to eliminate racial discrimination and promote race equality. This is done through the "Arrangements" set out under the Specific Duty under the Act.

These include:

  • Arrangements for monitoring existing policies for their adverse impact on the race equality;
  • Arrangements for assessing and consulting on the likely race equality impact of any proposed policy or policy change;
  • Arrangements for publishing the results of the assessments, consultations and monitoring;
  • Arrangements for ensuring that the public have access to information and services, and;
  • Arrangements for training staff on the Council's responsibilities under the Act, and on their role in helping the Council meet those responsibilities;
  • Arrangements for meeting the Specific Duty on employment.

The Race Equality Scheme also sets out the Council's approach to meeting the Specific Duty in regard to employment. Also, the scheme describes how the Council will support local schools to fulfill the Specific Duty in regard to education.

Race Relations Act

The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 introduced a General Duty, which requires all public authorities to which the Act applies to “have due regard to the need to eliminate unlawful racial discrimination and to promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different racial groups”.

Haringey Council’s first Race Equality scheme was produced in 2002, with an implementation plan to May 2005.

We have reviewed the Scheme in light of the past 3 years experience and have used the lessons learned to modify this updated Scheme. The Scheme follows the same structure as the original Race Equality Scheme. It sets out and describes how Haringey Council will meet its General Duties under the Act .
