Legacy of Hope

4 short films to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

A series of poignant documentaries focusing on the memories of Holocaust survivors have been produced by Haringey teenagers.

Six Haringey youngsters - Reece Taylor, Michael Amartey, Funmi Abari, VyVy Nguyne, Thao Ngo and Eirini Wallace - were involved in producing the four films, which focus on interviews with Holocaust survivors Roman Halter, Martha Blend, Ruth Schneider and Moshe Galili.

The films - a joint project between Haringey Council, video website TrueTube (external link) and History Speaks - have been made to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2010, which will carry the theme of the Legacy of Hope.

The films

The films are each around four minutes in length and feature the following stories:

1. Roman Halter

Architect and Auschwitz survivor Roman Halter talks about his experiences as a young Jew in Poland, where he was beaten as he made his way home from school.

Mr Halter was sent to the Lodz ghetto in 1940 and transferred to Auschwitz, from where he was liberated and brought to England in 1945.

2. Martha Blend

Author Martha Blend describes memories of her escape from Austria to London on board the Kindertransport.

She talks about the fate of those left behind, including her father, who were murdered in concentration camps.

3. Ruth Schneider

Dress designer Ruth Schneider grew up in Vienna where she never experienced anti-semitism until Hitler came to power and she was punched by a boy from the Hitler Youth.

Ruth's family fled Vienna and came to England with her family, where she were held in Holloway prison as an enemy alien.

4. Moshe Galili

Hungarian Jewish artist, Moshe Galili, talks candidly about how the Nazi's came to his town, his survival with help from the Swedish Consulate and the journey that led him to London.

To coincide with the screenings, Mr Galili will also be showing some of his artwork in the cafe at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Tottenham.
