Disability Access Guide
Achieving Equality and Respecting Diversity
The second edition of the Disability Access Guide is now available from Haringey's Equalities Unit. The guide includes two new sections which you may find informative and fun: the Welcome 2 my World section on Disability language and law, and Sign Language Alphabets.
The guide has been rewritten and updated through ongoing consultation with disabled people, disability organisations and the community of Haringey. As a result, the Disability Access guides will provide you with a good understanding of the facilities and levels of access you are likely to encounter in our Council buildings and for you to decide whether a venue or service is accessible to you.
The guide also focuses on promoting disability equality, removing barriers which lead to discrimination, and promoting the language and practices preferred by disabled children, young people and adults. Equality of access gives disabled staff and service users the opportunity to make choices and to be spontaneous when pursuing business, leisure and lifestyle activities. In practice the benefits of improved access to the working environment are felt by everyone.
Please use this guide to educate and make people aware of accessibility issues, to promote disability equality and to challenge traditional outdated practice. We all have a responsibility to break down barriers to make sure disabled people can exercise their full civil rights to be included in society.
