Making the Difference
Haringey Council has been running the Making the Difference scheme since 2004. Each of the seven Neighbourhood Management areas has a £50,000 budget to grant to local projects. The maximum grant is £10,000 for any one project and the scheme is managed through the Area Assemblies.
The Making the Difference scheme has resulted in:
- streets being brightened up with colourful rows of hanging baskets,
- new trees being planted where residents want them,
- more play equipment for children and
- more litter bins to help everyone keep Haringey clean.
There are also more benches to rest on, improved lighting and better placed notice boards to stop at and catch up with what's going on.
These changes are easy to see but other, not so obvious projects, are also helping residents improve their lives. These include:
- a handy person scheme to help senior citizens with gardening they can't get done themselves and
- a scheme in the east of the borough to get young people interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables in Bruce Grove.
Lead member for Community Involvement Lorna Reith said:
"We take real pride in listening to residents and the Making the Difference Budget is one way we can turn their ideas into action.
"It has been immensely satisfying to watch proposals on paper turn into real improvements on the ground and I look forward to seeing even more great ideas come to fruition in the Budget's second year."
The Making the Difference scheme is back for its fifth year (2008/09). We received nearly 500 applications for last years scheme. If you are interested in applying then contact us for an application form or download a copy from the Making the Difference programme page.
So if you want to get involved and help make real improvements to your neighbourhood, come along to your next Area Assembly and find out how you too can make a difference.
