Tottenham Green - Community First Fund

Tottenham Green has been selected to receive £84,775 in neighbourhood grants over the next four years as part of the Community First Programme. If you have a great idea for a project, that needs support and meets a local priority, find out here how you can apply.

What is Community First?

Community First is a government-funded initiative that will run for four years, until March 2015. The programme will help communities come together to identify their strengths and local priorities in order to plan for their future and become stronger. It will fund both new and existing community groups.

Why is Tottenham Green Ward eligible for local grants?

The ward was chosen because it was identified as one of the 30% most deprived wards in the Indices of Multiple Deprivation, as well as having a 10% increase in the number of benefit claimants (source: Job Centre Plus Benefit Data, May 2009/10).

What is the process for accessing funds?

Each eligible ward will set up a Community First Panel. These panels will raise awareness of the programme and work in the community to create a plan for how they will match and spend the money. The panel will make recommendations to CDF, who as administrator of Community First, will release funds provided the panel is able to demonstrate community involvement and support for the plan.

I have a good idea that meets one or more of the local priorities, what should I know before I apply?

  • £500 is the minimum and £2,500 is the maximum amount that can be awarded to groups for a period of one year. Groups can re-apply each year. This will be paid by BACS into your group's bank account
  • Funding for this programme is only available to groups, so if you have an idea to improve your neighbourhood, you must form a group to apply for funding
  • Funding is only available for projects which will be delivered within the Tottenham Green Ward
  • Groups will need to demonstrate match funding, such as volunteer time, donated cash, goods and services

As grants awarded will be small and volunteering opportunities in some cases may be limited, many groups will nonetheless, be dependent on volunteers to help deliver projects. Groups are to use an hourly rate of £11.09 to calculate the value of volunteer match time.

For example:

  • If you need £500 for your project, approximately 45 hours of volunteer time would need to be contributed which can be shared amongst volunteers.

So...

  • 1 person = 45 hours
  • 5 people = 9 hours each
  • 10 people = 4 and a half hours each

You will need to describe how many volunteers will be involved in the application.
