Area Assemblies - Making the Difference Programme

The 'Making the Difference' Programme

Making the Difference budgets are now in their fifth year. The budgets were introduced in April 2004 to give residents a chance to get local problems fixed quickly and continue to be a huge success.

Each of Haringey Council’s seven Area Assemblies has a budget of £50,000. Local residents, community groups and ward councillors can bid for up to £10,000 for one-off projects that really make a difference to their neighbourhood.

The seven assembly areas are as follows:

  • Crouch End
  • Muswell Hill
  • Northumberland Park and White Hart Lane
  • St. Ann’s and Harringay
  • Tottenham and Seven Sisters
  • West Green and Bruce Grove
  • Wood Green.

Applications received for 2007/08

The council received nearly 500 applications for Making the Difference (MTD) projects. The council would like to thank all the residents' groups who gave their time so responsibly to carefully research their bids. The quality of information that was received through the bidding process will be valuable in developing a better understanding of residents' priorities.

The council is confident that the assembly budgets will really 'make the difference', brightening up our neighbourhoods and improving residents' quality of life.

Many of the bids were about improving the local environment and included:

  • planting trees
  • replacing old street signs
  • installing better quality street lights
  • providing new litter bins

Particularly exciting are plans to install hanging baskets in some of our shopping parades and improve our parks and gardens. Haringey is looking to improve some 'eyesore' sites and implement measures to design out crime. Other themes have been supporting the needs of isolated elderly residents and projects to engage young people. All this amounts to a really creative programme.
