Role of the Mayor

Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Alan DobbieThe Mayor is the elected Chair of the Council and is the Civic and Ceremonial figure head for the Council.

The chain, badge and robes of office are an outward sign of this high office.

The Mayor is by statute the “first Citizen” which is an honorary title and means that the Mayor takes precedence over everyone apart from a member of the Royal Family and the Lord Lieutenant of London. The Mayor must be non-political and represent every section of the community.

Apart from the Civic and Ceremonial duties and functions that the Mayor performs for the Council, he or she also represents the borough at all major events and historical ceremonies in Haringey.

The Mayor has an important role to play in promoting the work of the council and supporting local community, voluntary and charitable organisations and in celebrating and recognising achievements and milestones.

About Councillor Dobbie

Councillor Alan Dobbie has been elected as The Mayor of Haringey for the municipal year 2008-09. Lance Chinnian is his Consort and Father Simon Clark of St. Mark's Church, Noel Park is the Mayor's Chaplain.

The Mayor took over the chains of office from Councillor Thompson at the Council's Annual Meeting on 19 May 2008.

Councillor Dobbie was born in 1966 in a house previously owned by Gracie Fields and given over to the NHS. The Mayor has lived in Noel Park all his life and attended Noel Park Primary and Stationers' Companies Schools. He previously worked as a postal worker and currently works as an NHS Medical Secretary at the North Middlesex Hospital in Edmonton.

Councillor Dobbie is one of three councillors for the Noel Park ward, he was elected in 1990 and served as Mayor of Haringey in 1995-96. Councillor Dobbie's surgery details are shown on his councillor web page.

The Mayor's interests include classical music and Egyptology. He is a fan of the BBC series 'Doctor Who' and supports Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
