The Leader's Page

Cllr Claire Kober, Leader of the Council

Welcome

Welcome to my webpage, where you can learn more about the role which the Leader plays in the council and in Haringey, and find out how to contact me.

Role of the Leader

The Leader is elected every four years by all members of the council.

The Leader chairs meetings of the council’s Cabinet – the main decision making group on the council – and leads on council policy development and implementation, and on Haringey’s communication with central government.

The Leader agrees the council’s Forward Plan, which maps out when key decisions will be made by the Cabinet.

Her role also involves working with the council’s partners on statutory bodies such as the NHS, the voluntary sector and the business community.

More information about the role of the Leader can be found in part 2, Article 7.01 of the Constitution.

About Councillor Kober

I’ve been a Haringey councillor since May 2006, when I was elected Labour member for Seven Sisters ward. I served as chief whip before becoming Leader of the council in 2008.

Since then, I’ve been working hard alongside my fellow councillors to enhance the borough, improve the council, and ensure that we continue to strive to meet the needs of the many diverse communities who live and work in Haringey.

I’m aware of the many challenges facing this borough, and am committed to tackling them.

As Leader, I have prioritised: working towards making Haringey the greenest borough through a 40 per cent reduction in carbon emissions; renovating the borough’s schools; building a new community school in the heart of Wood Green; regenerating Haringey through schemes such as Haringey Heartlands and Tottenham Hale; improving children’s services; improving housing, and supporting local businesses. We are committed to looking after the most vulnerable people in our communities.

I first got involved in politics when I was a student. I believed then that it was the means by which to achieve change to create a better, fairer and more just society – and I still believe that today.

My career is rooted in the voluntary sector, with a history of policy roles for a number of national charities. I have a particular interest in family policy, poverty and social inclusion issues, and was formerly Head of Policy for Family Action.

As a ward councillor for Seven Sisters, and as Leader of the council, I believe strongly in the principle of local people being involved in the decisions that affect their lives.

I am also Deputy Chair of London Councils, which brings together each of the capital’s 33 boroughs to lobby for fairer funding and a better quality of life for Londoners.
