Data Protection

Haringey Council holds personal information about its customers and clients and Haringey's residents. All the information about you that we hold is protected under the Data Protection Act 1998.

What is the Data Protection Act 1998?

The Data Protection Act is the legal framework that ensures your personal information is used fairly and lawfully.

By law, all organisations that hold information about you must follow the eight principles set out in the Act. These principles make sure your rights are protected and state that all information must:

  • be processed fairly and lawfully and only if certain conditions are met
  • be obtained for specified and lawful purposes
  • be adequate, relevant and not excessive
  • be accurate and where necessary kept up to date
  • not be kept any longer than necessary
  • be processed in accordance with the rights of data subjects
  • be kept secure
  • not be transferred abroad, unless to countries with adequate data protection laws.

Access to information about you

The Data Protection Act gives people the right to access information held about them. If you think that Haringey Council holds information about you and would like to access that information, please complete the relevant form in the attached files section below and return it to the Feedback and Information Governance Team (FIG). We charge £10 to process each request - the Information Commissioner says this is an appropriate fee (website - external link).

We aim to contact you within two working days of receiving your request to tell you when you can expect to receive the information or to ask you for any additional information we need to deal with the request and we aim provide the information within 40 working days of receiving the request.

Are you enquiring on behalf of someone else?

We must have the written consent of the person the information is about (the 'Data Subject') to give that information to someone requesting it on their behalf.
