Fairtrade Haringey

Fairtrade products are now widely available in shops and cafes but what does ‘Fairtrade’ mean?

It basically means that a farmer/producer in a developing country gets a minimum ‘fair’ price for their produce. This ‘fair’ price covers the cost of sustainable production and also offers protection from fluctuations in world prices. In addition, there is an extra premium that is invested in local social or economic development projects, like schools or training.

How do I know something is a Fairtrade product?

Check to see if it has the Fairtrade mark. This appears on certified products as an independent consumer label and is an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. A product cannot display the Fairtrade mark unless it meets international Fairtrade standards.

What sort of products are Fairtrade?

Fairtrade products currently include fresh fruit, cocoa and chocolate, coffee, tea, cotton products (like T-shirts), sugar, fruit juice, honey, nuts, preserves, rice, flowers, sports balls and wines and beers.

Haringey Council is applying to become a Fairtrade borough. There are currently 20 London boroughs that are Fairtrade boroughs and London became the world's largest Fairtrade city on the 23 October 2008. The criteria to become a Fairtrade borough includes having at least 33 local retailers stocking two or more Fairtrade products and 17 cafes also selling two or more Fairtrade items. We are confident we have this number and probably more in Haringey.

We will be producing a leaflet listing those retailers and cafes that stock Fairtrade products in the borough so that residents who want to buy Fairtrade know where to go. We have held a series of special events during Fairtrade fortnight in 2008 and during the year.

You can help by asking retailers and cafes to stock fair-trade products and by being aware of the source of the products you are buying.
