Sounding off at Cockpit

Using Cockpit Arts as a base, four artmakers from Artscope explored the local area of Bloomsbury and recorded their experiences through photography and phonography.

In the past the group have documented the urban/street scene of the local area, for example through architectural photography and the study of street patterns. This project built upon these experiences but focussed on green spaces.

Noticing the Unnoticed Photograph

Long term Artscope collaborator and photographer Jo Hill provided the photographic input, alongside Artscope's Keith Simmonds, who led on the phonographic element. Music producer Conrad McDonnell was credited with the final sound piece, a unique montage of the group's field recordings.

Traditionally, Jo Hill's work investigates surfaces from a visual perspective. By making field recordings in the outside environment, this collaboration also explored the effect that surfaces have on sound. This project investigated the cross over between these two mediums.
