How Do We Find Things Out?

A visit to the British Library as part of Learning Disabilities Week, is evolving into a collaboration between Haringey Day Opportunities Service and the Learning Department of this unique public institution.

The workshop, ‘How do we find things out?’, introduced a group of Haringey adults with profound learning disabilities to the idea of research in The Library by investigating the different ways we find things out. Using hands-on activities and object-handling, the practical workshop investigated what a library is, and how it's items are sorted.

After being approached by the British Library to advise on workshop delivery for visitors with severe disabilities, John Chapman of Haringey Council and Keith Simmonds of Artscope, have since met with Ria Bartlett, Manager of Learning at the British Library, and discussed how The Library could develop and extend their current workshop programme.

The British Library are very keen to build upon their current provision of public workshops and to open up their collection still further to new audiences. This meeting was the first of several that will attempt to find a way forward to open The Library doors even further.
