Sculpture Competition

Creating sculptural models for a design competition, proved a first for the Monday Open Studio Group. Entitled 'Imagine...Remember, Reflect, React', the winning design would be built and sited in the tranquil setting of the Holocaust Memorial Garden at Bruce Castle in Tottenham, London.

Artmakers; TJ Mills, Claudia Holder, Nikki Pringle and Robert Hardy, supported by Arts Co-ordinator Keith Simmonds and Volunteer Arts Worker Gigi Giannella, spent ten sessions exploring the themes that related to the Holocaust, researching the history of the Holocaust and working on their individual designs. The first rough sketches were refined over time as different materials like brass, copper and aluminium were introduced.

The group looked at examples of other successful memorial sculptures and watched a DVD 'The Sculpture 100 - England's Public Sculpture 1905-2005' to gain inspiration. Over the course of the project, each of the group began to focus on several designs and concentrated in working in a chosen technique.

For example TJ Mills worked in fibreboard initially, Claudia Holder worked directly with copper sheeting, Nikki Pringle worked with wire and Robert Hardy worked with liquid glue. Each of the group took the design process from initial thoughts and sketches through to experimentation with materials to a finished model, which they photographed and submitted for the competition.
