Sonic Boom

An exploration of sound

The project's central focus was on the exploration of sound through the voices of the participants and how sound changes according to the devices and structures through which it flows.

Ram Villa and Sally Hegarty communicate through a tube sculpture

The group began by constructing small sculptures that manipulated their own voices, for example, megaphone sculptures. Some of these were developed further to form large scale tubular constructions with interlocking sections for different people to input their own voices.

Recordings were made of the group's voices, sometimes a whisper, sometimes a repeated word or phrase, perhaps a grunt or the sound of teeth grating! These recordings were also played into the tubular constructions and the group listened to how the sounds echoed and reverberated.
