Modernism
Ex-Cockpit Arts photographer, Jo Hill, returned to Artscope to lead her fourth workshop. She recounted her experiences to give an insight into the project.
‘Using the exhibition 'Modernism - Designing a New World' at the Victoria and Albert Museum as a starting point, the group visited the exhibition, attended a hands-on workshop, completed a worksheet in the exhibition and used these ideas and images to inspire 10 weekly workshops. We explored various aspects of the Modernist movement including graphic design, furniture and animation.'

'The project was structured carefully in advance, basing different workshops on different disciplines. However the project was actually delivered in a more fluid and spontaneous way with the reactions of the individual group members to each week’s activity being directly used to plan the following week.'
For example, the group experimented with collage and produced a large scale artwork utilising transport images inspired by Henry Beck's famous map for the London Underground. In another workshop they produced animated flick books based on the photomontaged typography of 'Abeceda', an animated book by Vitezslav Nezval.
‘I felt that this fluid approach to the project worked very well as I was able to follow the lead of the group members and tailor the workshops much more closely to what they were responding to and enjoying the most. It also enabled me to come up with varying activities for people within the group according to their abilities and ways of working.'
