Regenerating Haringey

Your Council is working for you

Haringey Council and its partners are committed to narrowing the social and economic gap between the 'East' and the 'West' of the borough. Economic and social changes have tended to divide the borough.

The 'East' experiences unacceptably high levels of unemployment, poverty and related disadvantages, with the 'West' enjoying greater levels of economic prosperity. Find out more about how Haringey is trying to narrow this gap below:

Haringey is running key programmes to work towards improvement across the borough, as well as services designed to create opportunities for individuals and businesses to encourage sustainable economic growth.

Initiatives

Much work has already been done, and lots of things are happening in the borough to build on the strengths of a diverse and vibrant community. They are not all as visible as the renaissance of Wood Green town centre or newly built West Green Learning Centre. However, many initiatives contribute to improve the well-being of and opportunities for local people, including:

  • Neighbourhood Wardens
  • Energy Efficiency and Community Safety schemes
  • Accessing jobs at Stansted Airport
  • Training initiatives.

Approach

In order to develop and implement all these projects, Haringey Council and its partners use a wide range of strategies and methods. The Council's Economic Regeneration team is responsible for:

  • the overall strategy and direction of regeneration
  • securing funding for large borough-wide schemes
  • overseeing progress on delivery.

The Council Neighbourhood Management team provides a local focus on renewal initiatives in the priority neighbourhoods identified in the Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy. This local action is supported by borough wide service improvement by all agencies and by economic regeneration projects and programmes.

Urban Futures

Urban Futures is the regeneration agency for North London. It is not part of the Council but is used by Haringey Council, other local authorities and the London Development Agency to manage the delivery of specific regeneration programmes.

Haringey's role in the North London region

Many of Haringey's problems clearly cannot be tackled within Haringey alone. As part of Greater London, Haringey is not a stand alone entity. This is why a high priority is given to working in partnership with other boroughs in the North London Strategic Alliance (Haringey, Barnet, Enfield and Waltham Forest).

In the Upper Lee Valley partnership (Haringey, Enfield and Waltham Forest), the three boroughs take an integrated approach to economic development under European and London Development Agency funded programmes. The key objectives are employment, business development and infrastructure investment on identified strategic sites.

Haringey also works with partners across London including:

  • London Development Agency
  • Greater London Authority
  • Transport for London
  • One London
  • Greater London Enterprise
  • Business Link.
