St Ann's and Harringay

Overview

The Harringay and St Ann’s wards make up a vibrant area of the borough with a bustling centre at Green Lanes. Well known for its diverse community, shops, restaurants and cafes, Green Lanes attracts people not only from the borough but from across London to sample its authentic multicultural cuisines and patisseries.

Harringay and St Ann’s are well served with green space and includes Finsbury Park, Ducketts Common and Chestnuts Park. Smaller green community spaces like Railway Fields, Fairfax Falkland Open Space which has recently received additional funding by the Council to carry out major improvements and to be renamed as “Fairland Park” and the multi award winning the Gardens Community Garden (GRA), Doncaster Gardens, off Stanhope Gardens are well used by the local community.

The area has a good range of community facilities including a number of primary schools and community centres, a new children’s centre and St Ann’s hospital. There are also a number of local residents groups including an award-winning online network (external link) and faith groups representing and supporting the diverse communities of these two wards.

In 2006 a Neighbourhood Manager was appointed to Harringay and St Ann’s area. The manager’s role has been to work alongside the Area Assembly, the Green Lanes Strategy Group, key partner agencies, traders association and the community to develop ideas and to assist in delivering key priorities and objectives for the two wards.

History

The Harringay area developed in the late 19th Century with the “ladder” dating from 1881 and the Gardens from the 1890s. Both these developments came about as London expanded to the north of Islington. Grand Parade with its imposing row of shops along Green lanes was built in 1899. Until 1958 Harringay was the prominent hub of entertainment with its Greyhound Stadium, Arena, Coliseum (cinema) and Salisbury Hotel (billiard hall).

The area is rich in Victorian and Edwardian architecture with the east side of Green Lanes being made up of a half kilometre long stretch of terraced Edwardian shops and flats called Grand Parade.

Green Lanes Strategy Group

The Strategy Group was set up in 2003 to strike a balance between the needs of the business community and local residents. As the heart of the Harringay and St Ann’s neighbourhood, Green Lanes was targeted for improvements through a five year plan.

Led by the Area Assembly and the Green Lanes Strategy Group and delivered in partnership with the community and a very active Traders Association, the plan has successfully improved the area by:

  • getting all commercial premises trading in line with legal planning and licensing requirements
  • improving waste collection
  • reducing crime and improving road safety though the introduction of CCTV
  • improving the street environment though better street lighting, removing unnecessary street furniture, adding hanging baskets and planting of trees along Green Lanes and surrounding residential streets
  • improvement of the railway bridge over Green Lanes
  • increasing the frequency of street sweeping of Green Lanes and residential roads
  • tackling the problem of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and conversions - see PDF in attached files section below.

Looking Ahead

In 2009, the Green Lanes Strategy Group is planning the next stage of work for Harringay Green Lanes area. A local consultation in April 2009 will underpin the development of a 'Local Charter' and drive priorities over the next 5 years. It is planned to combine the launch of the 'Local Charter' with a celebration of the dynamism of the local community at a 'Street Festival' for Autumn 2009.
