Housing Services
Housing services and community development services are delivered to residents from an office at the heart of the estate. Customer Service Officers (CSOs) are also available, by appointment, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The CSOs deliver the same services that are available at all the Customer Services Centres around Haringey including information and advice on housing benefit, council tax, housing advice, abandoned vehicles and parking enforcement.
A Turkish interpreter is available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. An interpreter can be arranged for any language by prior arrangement.
The Neighbourhood Office is accessible to people with physical disabilities and there is an induction loop facility for the hard of hearing.
|Back to TopLocal Police officers engaging with the community
Safer Neighbourhood police officers are available to residents to give advice on crime prevention, take reports and assist with police matters. They have a satellite office at Broadwater Farm Community Centre.
|Back to TopReed in Partnership – helping people to help themselves build a better future
When people have been out of work for ages or never had a job, one of the hardest things is for them to believe that they really can make proper money, develop new skills and build real confidence. Help is at hand at the Neighbourhood Office on Mondays from 10am to 12 noon. Telephone Dee Adams on 020 8275 4162 for further information.
|Back to TopConcierge schemes
Six concierge schemes serve the estate with excellent CCTV coverage. Each scheme electronically links two blocks and is staffed by a concierge officer. Broadwater Farm is not only a safe place to live but its residents feel safer too (only 2% felt unsafe in the independent Tenant and Leaseholder Surveys 2003, conducted by Market Research UK).
Education
Three schools are situated at Broadwater Farm: Broadwater Farm Primary, and two schools for children with special needs, Moselle and William C Harvey. A major project is underway to integrate the three schools in an inclusive campus. The Award winning Children's centre with nursery and creche facilitie, opened in September 2005.
|Back to TopBroadwater Farm Enterprise Centre and Opportunities Centre
The Enterprise Centre at 1a Willan Road N17 has 21 business units, most of which are for commercial use. The Centre also runs computer and language classes from the Opportunities Centre at Gloucester Road N17.
The Opportunities Centre provides a drop-in for people looking for work. Job seekers are able to access employment opportunities using newspapers, display boards and the internet. For further information, Tel 020 8365 1965.
|Back to TopBroadwater Community Centre
The centre provides sporting activities for the youth, it offers computer and language classes, and is home to the senior citizens’ club. It is also available for hire for meetings and functions. For further information, Tel 020 8801 4115.
|Back to TopCommunity Health Centre
The Community Health Centre is not just a doctors’ surgery. It provides a wide range of services to the community including immunisation, midwifery, and family planning and baby clinic. Appointments can also be made to see a nurse practitioner, a health visitor, a dietitian and a clinical psychologist.
|Back to TopEstate Action Programme (EAP)
The EAP was brought about by Council and the local community working in partnership to improve the estate. In 1993, the government approved Estate Action Funding worth £33 million, to be used over an eight-year period to transform the estate.
The EAP brought the following improvements to residents of Broadwater Farm:
- Removal of walkways linking the estate’s 12 blocks
- Concierge schemes and CCTV surveillance for extra security and peace of mind
- Double-glazing for improved insulation and security
- Cladding of exteriors for improved insulation and an attractive appearance
- Individual heating systems in all blocks
- Four blocks re-wired
- Landscaping of open spaces and play areas making the estate more attractive and providing safe places for children to play.
The high degree of consultation with residents ensured the success of this project; with regular meetings of the Estate Action Strategy Group (consisting of residents, community representatives and council officers), consultation days and newsletters.
|Back to TopGetting involved
Residents can get involved (and get their voice heard!) in a variety of different ways on the estate. For example by:
- Becoming involved in the residents’ association
- Joining the Tenant Management Organisation that aims to deliver housing services on behalf of the council to tenants on the estate.
- Participating in Estate Inspections (Walkabouts) where residents are joined with ward councillors and council officers.
- Attending Housing Forums
- Membership of local organisations
- Forming community groups
- Organising events
- Lending a hand at functions, festivals and socials!
A community development worker is available to give information, advice and support on any of the above.
Telephone Chris Joannou on 020 8489 8660 or email: christopher.joannou@haringey.gov.uk
The main community events on Broadwater Farm during 2004 were the Multicultural Summer Festival, International Evening, Opening of Friendship Garden, Family Gospel Festival, Youth Presentation Awards, Family Fun Day, youth trip to Thorpe Park, senior citizen’s trip to Bournemouth and Christmas parties for children and the elderly.
