What are the classes like?

The leisure centres host a range of over 150 group exercise classes a week that will get your mind and body in shape, whether you are new to exercise or regularly exercise.

The classes range from traditional aerobics and water-based classes to new-to-exercise classes and holistic classes like Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi.

Whether you want to target specific 'trouble' areas of the body, improve flexibility or just have a good time with friendly people, there's a class to suit everybody.

Our classes here have been labelled into six aspirations that users of our classes may be interested in depending on your own personal preferences and goals for being active and exercising.

50+ Aerobic/Active Generation
Our qualified instructors offer specifically designed classes for our active generation customers. Easy going groups are designed for those who find our usual sessions just a little hectic (Suitable for Beginners). Loose comfortable clothing and flat rubber soled shoes required.

Ante-Natal Aqua Fitness
Suitable for pregnant women this aerobic workout takes place in the shallow pool, using the water resistance and buoyancy. Suitable for non swimmers.

Back to Exercise
Low intensity general conditioning class; suitable for beginners, people returning to exercise after long period of bed rest / injuries / pregnancy / exercise referral scheme 'graduates' etc.

Cardiac Rehab
Low intensity class for those referred from NHS Haringey referral scheme.

Chair Based Exercise
A specialised class aimed at individuals who would like to improve their strength, flexibility and posture. Suitable for those who are not prepared to sustain longer periods of standing / walking and / or may have troubles with balance. The entire class can be performed in a seated position if required.

Zumba Gold
As Zumba Fitness (see above) but modified and made less intense for the older adult active generation. Still full of fun and social feel.

Shape

Aqua Fitness
Aerobic work out in the shallow pool, using the water resistance and buoyancy. Suitable for non swimmers, post injury, weight management.

Total Body Workout / Body Conditioning
Full body workout combining step workout to target the lower body and toning exercises for arms and abs areas. High calorie burning class with floor exercises to target 'trouble' areas.

Body Sculpt / Active Pump
An intensive free weight barbell class performed to music aiming to develop muscle tone in all body areas.

Cardio Kick
An intense but simple aerobics class based on martial arts style choreography.

Legs Bums and Tums
A great workout for the typical trouble areas that many wish to target. It will always give you a full body workout including cardio and muscular fitness often using hand weights that target specific muscle groups to improve muscle tone.

Steps/Step with a Twist
A high intensity high impact workout using specially designed steps incorporating muscle toning, strengthening and flexibility. A challenging and effective workout for all levels, combining step, body conditioning, floor work and an intense abdominal section. Guaranteed to make you work.

Fun

Aqua Zumba
Burn calories and lose weight in the pool with Aqua Zumba. A low-impact class beneficial for those with injuries. (Suitable for non-swimmers).

Asian Fusion
A fast, funky workout using bhangra/ragga/bollywood sounds. Requires the use of every part of your body, a quick, fun way to get fit and in great shape. Toning exercise included. This class keeps you smiling from start to end.

Belly Dancing
Originates from the Middle East and besides being a beautiful dance it is also a great way to keep fit and exercise. You will improve your stamina, coordination and confidence. Fun and an escape from everyday routine.

Capoeira
Experience Brazilian dance, music, culture and the graceful moves of this unique art form that will work you to the core in a fun and playful way with Brazilian instructor Vinicius from the London based Capoeira Nago group.

Caribbean Rhythms
A fast, fun workout with Soca, Reggae and other enticing music to get your body moving. Uses every part of your body, a quick, fun way to get fit and in great shape and tone up. This class keeps you smiling from start to end.

Dance Aerobics
An aerobic low impact workout using salsa dance choreography steps and combinations.

Line Dancing
An USA style fun toting, heel stomping, thigh slapping low impact line dancing workout. American Country and Western progressive moves performed to modern up beat music. This is a fantastic aerobic workout. Increase coordination, mobility and Yeeeehar yourself to fitness (Suspended until September 2011).

Zumba Fitness
Combines high energy and motivating music with unique moves and combinations that allow the Zumba participants to dance away their worries. It’s based on the principle that a workout should be fun and easy to do.

Balance

Body Awareness (Feldenkreiss Technique)
Awareness through movement, focuses on posture, flexibility, breathing, can relieve stiffness and chronic pain also helpful in injury prevention. All exercises done on the floor and modifications and adaptations are offered for different abilities and needs.

Pilates/Pilates on Ball
This method of exercise has its origins in the work of the late Joseph Pilates and relies on strengthening the core postural muscles and developing body alignment. Exercise with the Pilates method focuses on working on the deep architectural structure of the body to achieve 'core stability' of both mind and body. Helps develop strength, flexibility, endurance and posture without building bulk or stressing joints. Pilates is also available as a class on fitness balls to help use this piece of equipment effectively.

Tai Chi
This old Chinese martial art form improves your balance and flexibility through ancient exercise patterns and gentle movements that can help relieve stress. The physical control involved will help create a focused mind and re-energised body.

Yoga (Astanga, Hatha, Iyengar)
A controlled movement class aiding relaxation and stress management with flexibility benefits.

  • Astanga is a dynamic form of Yoga. A combination of breathing and postures develops strength, stamina, flexibility and co-ordination.
  • Hatha is a gentler physical form of yoga that involves stretching and relaxing to improve flexibility and balance and to give you more strength and energy.
  • Iyengar is one of the most widely recognised approaches to Hatha Yoga created by BKS Iyengar. It involves the use of props, including blocks so that the practitioner can strive to achieve perfection in the posture and body alignment.

Sport

Mixed Circuit
Whole body workout combining aerobic and muscle work without music.

Schwinn/Indoor Cycle
Stationary bike work out to music. Concentrating on replicating a real outdoor cycling workout. Includes some interval training. Beginners need to arrive five minute early.

Spinning
Stationary bike work out to music. Beginners need to arrive five minutes early.

Power

Active Pump
An intensive free weight barbell class performed to music aiming to develop muscle tone in all body areas.

Boot Camp
An intense full body exercise session with the use of exercises and military training drills in a challenging and fun way.

Boxercise
Includes boxing style stations and techniques. You will learn different punches and movement using focus pads. It’s a full body workout, you will work on body movement, agility and momentum.

Boxing Circuit
A boxing based class involving partner work using punching gloves, pads, shields. Develops endurance, power, agility, strong mind. No previous experience necessary.

Hardcore Abs and Back
This class focuses on the abdominal and back area, the mid section and core muscles by working on all four layers of the abdominal musculature and the back extensors. Please note that participants with back injuries or problems may not be initially able to perform all the exercises.
