1. Who is now running the facility?
The Finsbury Park Sports Partnership Ltd, which is an entity made up of the groups and clubs that hire the facility. The Partnership will apply for charitable status shortly.
2. Is the facility open to the public?
No - the facility is operated on a block booking basis only.
3. Why has the council made this decision?
The council has to make difficult decisions given the large reduction in Central Government funding for council activities. This facility was costing the council £50,000 net per annum to operate. The council had two choices for this facility within this context. These choices were either to close the facility outright or seek to find a more innovative way forward by leasing it to the resident clubs and organisations using the facility.
4. There are planned improvement works - what are these and how will they be paid for?
The works planned are to upgrade the athletics facilities and pavilion/gym and infield works. The Partnership will apply to a range of external funding bodies, such as Sport England, for these funds.
The range and extent of the upgrade works is another reason that the council has had to take this course of action. This is because duly constituted charities involved in sports provision are in a better position, in the current climate, to draw down external funding.
Additionally the council has very little capital funding to carry out such works or match fund external capital.
5. When will the facility reopen to the public?
It is hoped that for individual users the Partnership will be able to open to the public within two to three years.
6. What options are available to the casual gym and track users?
The council is supporting the development of the Finsbury Park Gym Users Club. Casual gym users should speak to the organisers of this club about joining. The Gym Users Club will be offered some specific times that they can block book.
All individual users should also consider joining one of the existing clubs and train with the relevant club during their club hires. Gym use is programmed for adults as part of the relevant club hire time.
7. Why was the Partnership also given a lease for the tennis courts?
This decision was made in order to assist them to manage the Track and Gym. The track and gym facilities have historically required subsidy. There is a potential for the tennis courts to generate income to balance out this subsidy.
8. Does that mean the courts will become a pay and play facility?
Yes - in due course a tennis operator will be in place who will charge users. It is expected that this operator will apply to the council for Planning Permission to build a small pavilion and install floodlights at the courts.
The benefit of these developments is that customers can book courts in advance and will have toilet and other facilities close to the courts. Additionally the operator will run tennis courses, drop-in sessions, some general free use, free school/special group sessions and tournaments.
