Parkland Walk Improvements

Greenway Design and Ecological Mitigations Strategy

Parkland Walk (south)

The council has been working with stakeholder groups to develop preservation and enhancement measures for Parkland Walk (south) - running between Finsbury Park and Highgate. Parkland Walk is London’s longest nature reserve and a quiet route for walkers and cyclists.

The council developed a project with residents and local stakeholders such as the Police and Friends of Parkland Walk to improve the walk for its users, whilst maintaining its natural character and ecological quality.

The project started in December 2006, and proposals were consulted on. The draft proposals included addressing the drainage issues on the walk which was currently destroying the vegetation as a result of the constantly expanding path. Where the path has difficult, muddy or uneven surfaces these are to be remade using a crushed stone base, dressed with 'hoggin' - a naturally occurring mix of clay, sands and gravel.

Extensive input has been obtained from stakeholders, local residents, Friends of Parkland Walk and other interested groups. Works commenced in 2008 concentrating on drainage, access and path improvements. After a break for summer and in order to review the success of the works, further works on the path, its drainage and surfaces commenced in December for completion by March 2009.

Parkland Walk (north)

The Council has also been working with stakeholder groups to develop preservation and enhancement measures for Parkland Walk (north) from Muswell Hill Road to Alexandra Palace.

The Council has developed a project with residents and local stakeholders such as the Friends of Parkland Walk, local ward councillors and the Police to improve the walk for its users, whilst maintaining its natural character and ecological quality.

The project started in May 2007, and a range of improvements have been consulted on. These include improving the access to Parkland Walk (north) from Cranley Gardens to Alexandra Place, making this section of the the walk more accessible for prams and disabled users. Work has commenced for completion in late March 2009. There will be a seasonal break before completing outstanding work next winter.

Funding

The Parkland Walk project is paid for by funds applied for and allocated annually to Haringey by government/publicly funded Transport for London (TfL). The Greenway routes form part of Haringey's Local Improvement Plan (LIP). TfL funding allocated to Parkland Walk was £200k in 2007/08 and £250k in 2008/09.

'Walk London' who manage walking routes like the Capital Ring route that passes through Finsbury Park, Parkland Walk (south) and Queen's Wood is acknowledged for their financial contributions for path, signage and crossings improvements for the Capital Ring path for 2007/08 (£27K) and 2009/10 (£24k).

Project completion for both sections of the Parkland Walk will be in 2009/10 with minor works to complete, new signage, bins and benches. The estimated total spend in 2009/10 will be in the region of £150k.
