Muswell Hill Playing Fields

Muswell Hill Playing FieldsMuswell Hill Playing Fields are situated in Haringey and lie on the borough’s north eastern boundary, close to the A406 North Circular Road.

The site is nearly 10 hectares in size and is listed as a ‘site of local importance for nature conservation'.

Like most parks and open spaces it is designated as Metropolitan Open Land. Metropolitan Open Land gives protection to open spaces and can only be built on where the building adds to, or supports, recreational activity ie paths, tennis courts, play facilities, café, toilets, changing accommodation, parks compound, limited access parking etc.

There are 6 usable grass soccer pitches, plus a further pitch, which is subject to flooding and one separate space that is historically a cricket pitch. Temporary changing room accommodation and welfare facilities for Parks ground staff are also available on site.

Consultation

An agreement with a new housing development, building in the neighbouring vicinity, has resulted in a sum of money for improving the playing fields.

In addition, further local sites are earmarked for disposal, which should add to this sum.

To discover new ideas for improvement to the playing fields we will consult with current users, pitch hirers and local Haringey residents.

During July and August 2008 council officers met and discussed the potential for improvements with interested sports and non-sports representatives including local Friends Groups, young people, residents associations, football club pitch hirers, and housing associations.

The project was formally introduced on Sunday 7 September at the Muswell Hill Area Assembly meeting. A postal survey was also delivered to Haringey streets within a 400m radius of the playing fields. The survey sought opinions on a number of proposals for new amenities and asked for new ideas and relevant comments.

The consultation ended on 13 October 2008 and the results can now be found in the attached files section below.

Based on the discussions and survey results a Master Plan will be drawn up and the project costed. Proposals along with the supporting business plan will be put to the Council’s decision-making Cabinet in late January 2009.

Copies of a landscape artist's impression of a small local park provided on a small part of the Muswell Hill Playing Fields can be found in the attached files section below. Larger copies can be viewed at the Muswell Hill and Barnet libraries. Please note the amenities shown on the drawings are ideas only for illustration purposes.

If you would like any further information regarding the planned improvements to Muswell Hill Playing Fields or to give your views please email Parks or call 020 8489 5873.
