Hate Crime

What is hate crime?

Hate crime is where a person’s prejudice against an identifiable group of people (e.g. Muslims, gays or lesbians, ethnic minorities) is a factor in determining who it is they choose as their victim.

However, to be a victim of hate crime, you do not have to be a member of an identifiable minority group or someone who is generally considered vulnerable. In fact, anyone can be the victim of a hate crime.

Hate Crime and Harassment Strategy 2007/08

This strategy has been developed in partnership with the local community and in collaboration with our partner services such as the police, health and the voluntary sector. We have worked together to look at how we can improve our response to a range of problems from an isolated incident of verbal abuse to prolonged harassment and serious violent assault. We have also agreed to co-ordinate our efforts more effectively to increase the reporting of these crimes by building confidence across our diverse communities. Please see Strategy below for full details.
