As from 31 December 2006 the Safer Neighbourhood Teams have been at full strength in all 19 wards.
Two Priority Wards Initiative (Metropolitan Police Service Anti-Social Behaviour Control Strategy)
Each Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Borough Command Unit (BCU) was tasked with identifying two challenging wards. This selection was based upon high levels of Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB), fear of crime, or lack of confidence in the Police. The only exception to this was where a BCU contained one of the key violent crime wards. In this instance, inclusion of those wards within this programme became mandatory. The chosen wards within Haringey included Tottenham Green and Noel Park. Tottenham Green because it was listed as one of the MPS’s eight most violent wards (based upon 2005) and Wood Green, which is often flagged as a hotspot in the borough.
The Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) on these wards have delivered a high quality version of the SN 7-stage business model. This involves research about the priority ward followed by comprehensive engagement with all parts of the community. Local issues were then identified and analysed in order to identify the critical underlying problems in the areas chosen. SNTs and partners involve the neighbourhood ward panel to prioritise the issues and engage in partnership problem solving. Once resolved, the neighbourhood ward panel will be asked to sign off the problem and select a new issue to be tackled.

With partners, the Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be focusing on 5 key estates in the borough in a programme which aims to tackle the areas of greatest need. The estates were determined centrally and are listed below:
- Seven Sisters ward -Tiverton Estate
- Northumberland Park ward - Rothsbury Walk
- West Green ward - Milton Road
- St. Ann’s ward - Ida Road
- Tottenham Hale ward - Ferry Lane Estate
Activities to date
Activity to date has included as follows (in relation to both 2 wards and 5 estates):
- Questionnaires on every street / road in both wards regarding local issues and the fear of crime
- Reports were produced by the Borough Information Unit and fed back to the relevant Sergeants to action identified issues
- High visibility patrols carried out in areas of concern
- Action taken - eg to tackle youth disorder and drugs related ASB through Crack House Closures
- Target to refer 3 youths from each ward to the prevent and deter panel for diversionary activity
- Safer Shops Initiative (MPS ASB Control Strategy)
Five small retail areas (detailed below) were identified locally in partnership with businesses as suffering from ASB. Safer Neighbourhood Teams worked with retailers in these areas over the Christmas period, offering support, advice, high visibility and intelligence gathering. This has resulted in an improved working relationship. The areas were:
- Muswell Hill Broadway N10 - Muswell Hill ward
- West Green Road N15 (between Green Lanes and Belmont Road) - West Green ward
- Tottenham High Road N17 (between St Loys Road and Pembury Road) - Bruce Grove ward
- Arch Way Road - Highgate ward
- Commerce Road N22 - Bound Green ward
Community Payback
Payback is a means by which offenders with Unpaid Work Orders can make reparation to local communities through continued effective work and is under the supervision of the London Probation Service, Haringey Youth Offending Service (YOS) and Safer Neighbourhoods Programme.
|back to topNoel Park Safer Neighbourhood Team
Owing to Noel Park’s unique position in Haringey, extra funding was provided by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to the Noel Park Safer Neighbourhood Team in 2006/07 to enhance the work of the team as they settled into the ward and started to address the communities' concerns.
One of the many successful projects run by the team was the Safer Neighbourhoods Shop in Wood Green High Road in the run up to Christmas. Free advice was given by neighbourhood wardens, police and fire service during the four weeks the shop was open.
Another of the successful projects is the community football team “The Avenues”, again funded through the Neighbourhood renewal Fund and carried out in partnership with Spurs Football Club. One of the community concerns was young people playing football in the streets on the ward. This project takes the young people off the street and provides them with a constructive outlet for their football skills.
