Hate Crime
What is hate crime?
Hate crime involves any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a personal characteristic. The definition covers five main strands, in particular - disability, gender-identity, race, religion or faith and sexual orientation.
Legislation has been in place for a number of years to protect victims from such hate crimes, including offences for those who intend to stir up racial hatred, and those who commit racially and religiously aggravated offences or engage in racist chanting at football matches. New criminal offences have also been introduced in recent years to reflect the seriousness of hate crime, including enhanced sentencing.
Hate crime can include for example:
- verbal abuse
- physical attack
- offensive literature
- graffiti
- damage to property
- arson

Who makes the report?
You or the victim, but the Anti-Social behaviour Action Team (ASBAT) will contact the victim so you need their details and consent.
How do you make the report?
- Call the ASB reporting line on 020 8489 1000
What information is needed?
Name of victim/reporter eg Mr Adam Smith, address - including post code, daytime telephone number / email address, brief description of people, location and what was done/said.

In an emergency always dial 999. For a non-emergency ring 101 where a report will be taken and allocated to the appropriate borough / area who will make contact with you.
You can also report non-urgent crimes via the Met's online crime reporting facility.
