UK Youth Parliament (UKYP)
The next election will be held during the period Monday 26 January to Friday 30 January 2009. If any young person would like to be a candidate for the next elections they need to contact the Participation Team on 020 8493 1002 or email youth.office@haringey.gov.uk by Friday 28 November 2008.
The UK Youth Parliament is a national body of members from boroughs and towns across the UK.
It meets on a regional and national basis and also stages special events. It is necessary to pay a membership fee to be part of the UKYP.
Although we have had members in the past they have not been elected through a wide franchise.
Previous elections
For the second year our youth service has organised democratic elections taking place across the borough involving schools and youth centres.
Flyers were sent out in December inviting any young person between the age of 12 and 19 to consider standing and to attend a day training event in January. Ten candidates came forward.
Over 2000 young people participated in elections on 31 January (almost treble last year's figures) to be one of three Haringey representatives.
After a lively campaign based on their manifestos the successful candidates were:
- Adam Jogee (also co-leader)
- Fargina Begum
- and Sam Newton-Fenner
- Shayan Moftizadeh, co-leader and UKYP member last year was successfully elected to represent the London Region on the National UKYP Executive.
- Adam is an existing member of the HYC executive. He is now joined by:
- Fargina (aged 15) a student at Park view Academy
- Sam (17) a student at Fortismere school
