Junior Citizens
Junior Citizens Award Scheme
Junior Citizens is all about getting children actively involved, by making a positive contribution to:
- their school
- their family
- and to the wider community
In school years 5 and 6 children can take part in the Junior Citizens Award Scheme, supported by the Tottenham Grammar School Foundation.
The Junior Citizens Award Scheme includes:
- Carrying out a research project on a topic which supports their own growth and development
- Making a commitment to helping more at home
- Contributing to their school by taking on responsibilities to help others
- Finding out more about their community and the services that support it
- Learning about democracy on a local and regional level
At the end of the year children receive a signed certificate from the Mayor.
|Back to topJunior Citizens Debate
Every year, Haringey Children’s and Young People’s Service hold the Junior Citizens Debate for Year 6 pupils.
This is unlike a traditional debate but takes the form of a presentation on a theme relevant to national and council priorities.
In the past themes have included:
- bullying
- the environment
- healthy eating
- use of mother tongue in schools
- and the suitability of local play spaces
Teams of up to four pupils give a presentation of up to ten minutes on the theme, using illustrations, drama and music to enhance their presentation.
A panel of judges assess the presentations and decide on the winning team using the following criteria:
- Organisation of materials and clarity of argument
- Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of issues
- Appreciation of counter arguments to the views presented
- Presentational skills and delivery
All children receive a certificate for participating and the winning team received individual prizes as well as a prize for the school.
