Becoming a Learning Mentor
Learning Mentors provide support and guidance to children, young people and those engaged with them.
They work to remove barriers to learning in order to support effective participation, enhance individual learning, raise aspirations and achieve full potential.
They are skilled practitioners who work from a strengths based, person centred perspective.
They work closely with:
- teachers
- families
- teaching assistants
- special needs assistants
- school management teams
Schools identify children who, are not fulfilling their potential. Learning Mentors develop individual action plans to help them overcome barriers to learning. The learning mentor then supports the pupil to help them achieve these goals.
|back to topLearning mentors work with pupils one-to-one and in small groups, both inside and outside of the classroom.
The learning mentor role includes support to:
- improve attendance and punctuality
- develop social skills
- increase confidence
- promote emotional literacy
- develop anger management strategies.
They liaise with the pupil’s family or carers to involve them in providing support to meet the child's needs and to help their progress.
|back to topLearning mentors may refer children they work with for extra support. Referrals can be made to:
- social and youth services
- education welfare services
- careers services
- out of school study support
- business and community voluntary mentors.
Support may take the form of:
- courses
- activities
- individual support
- counselling.
