Approved employment with a child employment licence
The minimum age to start work is 13 and you can do any light work including
- shop
- agricultural/horticultural
- paper delivery
- office
- hairdressing
- hand car washing in private residential setting
- café or restaurant
- riding stables
- domestic work in an office
- hotel or other establishment offering accommodation.
Permitted work times for 13-14 year olds
Term time
- Sunday - Friday between 7am - 7pm for two hours per day (but not during normal school hours)
- Saturday between 7am - 7pm for five hours per day
- Maximum of 12 hours per week.
School holidays
- Monday - Saturday between 7am - 7pm for five hours per day.
- Sunday between 7am - 7pm for two hours per day
- Maximum of 25 hours per week
Permitted work times for 15-16 year olds
Term time
- Sunday - Friday between 7am - 7pm for two hours per day (but not during normal school hours).
- Saturday between 7am - 7pm for eight hours per day.
- Maximum of 12 hours per week.
School holidays
- Monday - Saturday between 7am - 7pm for eight hours per day.
- Sunday between 7am - 7pm for two hours per day
- Maximum of 35 hours per week.
Remember
- you cannot work if you are under 13
- it is illegal to work without a work permit. You will not be insured
- you will need to use a work permit until you have finished your compulsory education (the last Friday of June in the school year when you reach 16)
- you cannot start full time work until you have finished your compulsory education and officially left school.
Licences for employment
It is the employer's responsibility to register the young person with the local education authority, telling them where the young person works.
An application form will require the parent's signature and declaration of their child's fitness to work. They cannot work without their parents knowledge and consent.
This also applies to parents employing their own children in the family business.
