Behaviour Support Teams

Haringey Behaviour Support Teams (HBST)
Primary and Secondary

Haringey Behaviour Support Teams (HBST) (Primary and Secondary) work within the framework of the Haringey Children and Young People’s Plan ‘Changing Lives’ and adhere to the vision put forward by the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda to achieve the ‘Five Outcomes for Children’ which are:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

HBST work as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team across all three Children’s Networks (North, South and West). The purpose of the HBST (Primary and Secondary) is to advocate for Haringey’s most vulnerable children and young people in order to get the support that they need and for them to be able to enjoy the same opportunities that other children and young people in Haringey enjoy.  The aim of the teams is primarily to reduce exclusions and to promote inclusion of all children in Haringey schools. In order to achieve this aim, we work with children, school staff, parents/carers and other agencies to develop whole school systems and implement a range of strategies for including children at risk of disaffection and/or exclusion. Schools can refer children to our teams by completing a Common Assessment Framework (CAF) referral form which is then considered by the Children’s Network Panel. We also support children who have HBST highlighted on their Statement of Special Educational Needs.

A major focus of our intervention is to increase the skills, confidence and emotional awareness of children through group, whole class and individual work. We work in partnership with school staff in order to increase the children’s ability to manage their own behaviour through teaching and modelling a range of appropriate strategies.  At the same time, we aim to work with staff in order to empower them and enhance their skills, confidence and strategies for managing challenging behaviour presented by classes and/or individual children.

We offer central and school-based training to all school staff and parents/carers on promoting inclusion and emotional literacy as well as dealing with issues around behaviour, bullying and discrimination.

We offer advice and support to schools to help increase capacity and develop effective strategies and systems for dealing with negative practices, such as bullying and discrimination, in order to promote an inclusive ethos.
