Childcare Sufficiency Assessment (CSA)

The Childcare Act 2006 places a duty on local authorities to make sure that there are enough childcare services for parents that want them, in order for them to work or train.

In 2011, we carried out our second full childcare sufficiency assessment which identifies the supply and demand for childcare and any gaps in childcare provision. You can read the final report in the attached files section below, which gives a detailed account of our findings and either download the full document (163 pages long) or view it in sections. A summary will be available shortly.

An action plan is being developed as a result of this report and will be available on this page early in 2012.

Main findings from the 2011 CSA:

  • There is low take up of the Early Years Free Entitlement of 15 hours free childcare by parents and lack of flexible places
  • More places for disadvantaged two year olds are needed by 2013
  • Childminders have nearly three times the number of vacancies in the north network than the private voluntary and independent sector (private nurseries, playgroups and independent schools (PVI’s )
  • There is demand for more Breakfast and After School clubs from parents, including parents with disabled children across the borough
  • There is demand for Holiday Play Schemes by parents in the west network and parents  with disabled children want to see more places across the borough
