Gypsies/Roma/Travellers

The Haringey Traveller Team aims to work closely with Traveller, Gypsy and Roma families, schools, and Services to ensure access and raise the achievement of Traveller pupils.

The Traveller Education Team consists of a

  • manager
  • primary teacher
  • secondary Inclusion Officer
  • and 2 Family Outreach Officers

The team work across a number of schools on a rolling programme of support. Their role is to:

  • Raise the achievement of Traveller/Gypsy/ and Roma pupils through work with pupils parents, schools and services
  • Promote the accessibility of education for Travellers
  • Inform schools of Traveller culture by providing resources and INSET
  • Enable all Traveller pupils to achieve their full potential in the educational process.

The Team supports schools by giving advice and guidance, training, and home/school liaison to support schools in developing partnerships with Gypsy/Roma and Traveller parents.

The team works at all levels within the Children’s Service, ensuring the LA (Local Authority) policies and practices include the needs of Travellers, Gypsies and Roma and other mobile groups.

They provide time-limited interventions that aim to effect changes that schools can sustain, advise schools on ways of working that encourage Traveller, Gypsy and Roma families to become actively involved and resources that reflect their culture.
