Learning Support Funds (LSF) 2008/2009

The LSF is a limited discretionary fund which can help students with a one off grant of up to a maximum £400 to assist sixth form students with a contribution towards special equipment, course books or materials, field trips, travel expenses to attend UK university interviews and child care, who have a specific financial need which presents barriers to studying or are disabled, have a medical condition or have learning difficulties.

Criteria for LSF

You must meet the following criteria:

  • aged between 16-19 ( 20* for child care)
  • are normally resident in the borough of Haringey;
  • currently receiving an education maintenance allowance (EMA) or
  • currently entitled to receive free school meals
  • or you are disabled, have a medical condition or have learning difficulties
  • attending a school sixth form full time.

We will consider the one off grant for a contribution towards the cost of:

  • special equipment that you may need for your course
  • books or materials that you may need for your course
  • a school field trip
  • the cost of travel expenses to attend UK university interviews. Travel must be by the most economical method.
  • childcare - the applicant must be aged 20+ and the main carer of the child. The child must be cared for by an OFSTED registered nursery / creche / child minder.

How to apply

  1. Complete application form learning support funds application form in the attached files section below
  2. Submit one of the following:
    • a copy of your education maintenance allowance (EMA) award notification 2008/09.
    • a copy of your free school meals entitlement letter which is dated within the last two months.
    • a statement regarding your disability, medical condition, or learning difficulties.

We may ask you to submit more information but we will let you know.

Payment

If your application is successful you will be notified in writing showing how much has been approved. Payment will be made by cheque.

Unsuccessful applications

You have the right to appeal against the decision. You should submit an appeal in writing stating your reasons why you feel that we have not applied the policy correctly.

You should submit your appeal within ten working days of receiving your decision to the student finance manager at the address below.

Please remember

The discretionary LSF is cash limited. It is administered on a first come first served basis. We may not be able to help every applicant.
