Heartlands High School BSF

The South Wing

Creating a new school in Haringey was both a huge challenge and a remarkable educational opportunity. That the school opened on time and within budget is a real testimony to all those involved.

A Clear Vision

Providing a modern community school was essential to meeting the needs of our young people and helping to meet the increasing demand for secondary school places in the borough.

A School to be Proud of

On 3 September 2010 students and staff started their first day of school at Heartlands High School. Excited students had access to classroom spaces on four levels of the south teaching wing, as well as administration rooms. There were also the four ICT suites, the multi use games areas, dining hall and kitchen, and cycle racks for up to 80 bikes.  Work then continued in other sections of the school.

Today, students and staff at Heartlands High School are enjoying access to classroom spaces on different levels across both wings of the school. Students are also now experiencing extra teaching and learning space - with 24 classrooms; a sports hall; an auditorium; dance studio; Learning Resource Centre; design technology classrooms; Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) rooms and office space for staff.

The teaching taking place here is already very impressive, and completion of the final sections of the school will make it an even bigger asset to our young people and the wider community.”

Cllr Lorna Reith, Cabinet Member for Children's Services

The right architect and construction partner

A third floor classroom

The architects, TP Bennett helped to crystallise our ideas. We established a number of themes which supported the development of the design. These were distinct learning clusters, the central forum area, and sustainability.

Appointing our building contractor was not without its problems. The council moved quickly after losing confidence in the ability of the pre-construction building partner to deliver the school on time. Swift action and the re-tendering of the Heartlands school contract in 2009 provided improved value for money for the Council. Despite this the appointment of Willmott Dixon gave the project great impetus and confidence, particularly given their record of delivering our Sixth Form Centre on time.
