Computers and ICT in schools

ICT classroom

Transforming teaching

A key aim of our Building Schools for the Future programme is to transform teaching and learning by improving Information Communications Technology (ICT) - including computers and teaching equipment, such as interactive whiteboards.

To help achieve this we have been working with each school to help identify their specific ICT needs.

With the ICT needs of schools and students in mind, we have started a contract with a company called RM Education. RM is now responsible for installing all the required ICT equipment, software and networks for secondary schools and for providing maintenance.

Exciting new ways of teaching and learning

In the future, students will have greater access to state of the art ICT facilities such as interactive whiteboards, wireless networks, laptops, mini-books, and email touch-screen stations. Teaching and learning materials will be available online and students will have the opportunity to communicate with their tutors and other students through email, the Internet and interactive online learning environments.

Interactive whiteboards

Interactive whiteboard

An interactive whiteboard is a surface onto which a computer screen can be displayed, via a projector. The screen responds to touch and allows teachers or students to control the computer from the whiteboard. Whiteboards can help to communicate exciting, new ideas, and also encourage student involvement. The interactive whiteboard gives teachers the opportunity to use video clips, the Internet, interactive presentations and colour visuals in lessons.

New computers

RM Computer

All schools will be receiving new PCs, mainly to replace older machines. Many schools such as Gladesmore Community School and John Loughborough School have already had new ICT suites, which feature new PCs and ICT. The new PCs, supplied by RM feature the latest technology and connectivity and ensure that students have greater access to ICT. In addition, Alexandra Park School and Highgate Wood School are upgrading their media and music suites. As part of this, RM are providing new Apple Macintosh computers to enable these schools to deliver lessons in these subjects using the latest software available; giving students greater opportunities in terms of what they can achieve.
