Resources for supplementary schools

Supplementary and Community Language Schools (SCLS) in Haringey

Haringey Council in partnership with Haringey Association of Voluntary and Community Organisations (HAVCO) and ContinYou, the National Resource Centre for supplementary schools, are working together to provide support to SCLS that provide academic, mother tongue and cultural activities and support for children and young people living in Haringey:

If you are a community group or voluntary organisation considering setting up a supplementary school please follow the steps listed below.   

  1. Step 1 Register your school with the National Resource Centre for  Supplementary Schools
  2. Step 2 Register your organisation with Haringey Association of Voluntary and Community Organisations (HAVCO)
  3. Step 3 Contact the Children and Young Peoples Services Community Participation Officer

1. Register your school with ContinYou, the National Resource Centre for Supplementary Schools (NRC)

ContinYou, NRC is a support network and advocate for supplementary schools and aids established and newly arrived migrant communities wishing to develop community-led educational projects for children and young people. NRC aims to work with supplementary school leaders, education professionals and campaigners to:

  • raise standards
  • raise profile
  • build partnerships and support

The NRC works directly with supplementary schools. This includes facilitating the Quality Framework for Supplementary Schools, training local supplementary school mentors, providing training, advice and online resources to support schools with management, teaching and learning, monitoring and evaluation and fundraising.

2. Register your organisation with Haringey Association of Voluntary and Community Organisations (HAVCO)

HAVCO is the council for voluntary service in Haringey. It is an independent registered charity that exists to support, promote and develop voluntary and community organisations in Haringey.

HAVCO run a number of projects to support voluntary and community organisations, including funding advice, community accountancy and Haringey's Volunteer Centre. All HAVCO's services are provided free of charge to voluntary and community organisations based in Haringey.

3. Contact the Children and Young Peoples Services (CYPS) Community Participation Officer

The Community Participation Officer will provide you with advice and guidance on the key steps required to enable you to successfully establish your school. As well as providing advice and guidance the officer will be able to sign post you to local resources, policies guidance and training.

4. Haringey Supplementary and Community Language Schools Forum

Once you have successfully set up your SCLS you may wish to join Haringey Supplementary and Community Language School’s Forum. The forum represents the voice of the SCLS in Haringey. If you are interested in joining the forum please contact the Community Participation Officer (details above) who will be able to provide you with all the necessary information.
