Catering staff work in partnership with schools and health advisors, educating and promoting healthy lifestyles to the adults of the future.

Our staff are well trained and committed to providing healthy and nutritious meals, which are served in a safe environment.

Our menus meet the New Nutritional Standards being introduced by the Government In September 2008

Menu toolkit

A Menu Toolkit is now available in all primary schools.

This is a three week cyclic menu offering a choice of two main meals daily, one of which is suitable for Vegetarians.

The menu will include healthier fish options and a wider range of freshly prepared salads and vegetables.

Cheese and crackers served with sultanas, fresh fruit and yoghurt are available daily as options to the main dessert of the day.  

The new menu is flexible and can be tailored to meet cultural and special dietary needs of each school.

Strict ‘Healthy Eating’ guidelines will be followed. These include:

Orange Drink

  • Reduced fat, sugar and salt
  • Increased fibre
  • A wider range of freshly prepared salads and vegetables available daily
  • Tinned fruit in natural juices
  • Fresh fruit and yoghurt available daily

Help us improve

You can help us to improve our service by:

  • Speaking to us, the Headteacher or a School Governor about any queries you have, or any suggestions that may improve our service.
  • Visiting your child’s school by pre-arranged appointment to see the service provided.
  • Letting your school know if your child has any special dietary needs.

Other catering services available

Our Catering Services can also provide the following services:

  • Buffet lunches / sandwiches are available for school staff meetings, school Governors meetings, teacher training days and special school events.
  • Breakfast service
  • After school clubs
  • Packed lunches for school trips, or other occasions when a hot meal is not practical.

Useful information

  • Individual schools set their own charges for meals.
  • Some children may be eligible for free school meals, see the Free School Meal application page for further details.
  • Children may take their own packed lunches to school.
  • In many schools, children with packed lunch sit in the same dining hall as children eating school meals.
  • Many schools in Haringey provide fresh fruit at morning break.
  • Some schools run a breakfast club and after school clubs.

Pukka Tukka

A new drive to get Haringey's primary school pupils eating healthier food was launched in September 2006.

Around 35,000 copies of a leaflet - “Pukka Tukka” - (See attached files section below) were sent to primary schools and parents in the borough.

Pukka Tukka sets out the benefits of healthy eating, offers some practical tips for parents and has some tasty recipes.

Pukka Tukka is the latest initiative in Haringey’s Healthy Schools Programme which encourages healthier foods at:

  • school lunches
  • breakfast clubs
  • snacks sold in tuck shops
  • vending machines
  • and after-school clubs.
