The new community secondary school in Haringey
The new secondary school in Haringey Heartlands will open in September 2010 and will be a mixed comprehensive school with specialisms in visual arts and media.
It will provide for pupils aged 11 to 16 with a roll of 1080 when full capacity, plus 25 additional places in a special resource base for pupils with autism. When it opens it will cater for 162 pupils in year 7.
The design of the school will enable extensive community use of facilities and the school will make a strong contribution to the local community.
Student progress will be accelerated early through strong links with local primary schools and an innovative approach to teaching and learning.
|Back to topThe vision for the new school
“Our vision is for a high achieving, inclusive, multi-faith community comprehensive school, in which all young people achieve their potential through high quality personalised learning that is designed to meet their individual needs.
"All young people will make excellent progress from different starting points. The school will make a strong contribution to the well-being and cohesion of the local community and gain from connections across the capital.”
- from the Haringey Council Proposal.

A project board has been established to develop a curriculum for the new school and to work with architects to design the facilities required to support that curriculum and the vision for the school.
We are currently exploring the options to partner the new school with one or more successful schools in Haringey. Such a federation has many advantages, particularly in the early stages of opening the new school. If these discussions do not lead to a formal federation, we will establish a temporary governing body to support the ongoing development of the school in autumn 2008 and appoint the headteacher and key staff in September 2009.
We do not yet have a name for the new school, so we will run a competition with local primary schools and their pupils to propose names.
|Back to topWhy is a new secondary school needed
Pupil numbers in our primary schools have risen in the past ten years. Pupil projections indicate that this trend will continue.
Also pupil numbers in our secondary schools have increased to the point where all of the schools are nearly full and projections show that we will need to open a new school by 2010.

Four proposals were submitted for the competition to establish the school. The panel of adjudicators, Dr Elizabeth Passmore (chair), Dr Peter Matthews and Mr Richard Lindley, concluded that our proposal presented the most convincing case and would be likely to provide a school that would meet the need for extra places in our borough and add a dimension to the provision not currently available.
The office of the Schools Adjudicator published their decision, a copy of which is available in the attached files section below.
|Back to topArchitect pictures and drawings
Resident and community drop-in events took place on Wednesday 23 January and Monday 28 January 2008 to publicise the designs proposed for the new secondary school. Members of the BSF team and the architect were at the event to answer any questions about designs.
At the event a number of drawings were displayed which showed
- an aerial view of the local area with the site for the new school identified; and
- current designs of how the site will be used to build a new school.
Below are the pictures displayed at the event. Click on a picture below to view a larger version of the photo (jpeg file).

You could help to shape the vision for Haringey’s new secondary school
Before the new school opens in 2010 we’re looking for ideas and suggestions for the school, and seeking to develop a broad and balanced curriculum.
To help to do this, we’re setting up a parents’ panel made up mainly of a small group of local parents and guardians.
The panel will meet approximately every six weeks.
We’re interested in hearing your views. So, if you would like to express an interest in becoming a member of the new school parents’ panel, email bsf@haringey.gov.uk.
|Back to topNew school naming competition
We would like Haringey’s primary school pupils to help us find a name for the new school. To make a suggestion for the new school’s name, pupils should use the competition entry form, which is available in the attached files section below.
Completed entry forms should be put in an envelope and returned to the address below.
