Family Link Short Breaks Service

Short breaks for disabled children

Family link short breaks is a service for disabled children and their parents that ‘links’ them with another family or individual to give them a short break.

For those who have a disabled child, family life can be enjoyable but hard work.

Everyday activities, spending time with other children, or having an evening out can be difficult and sometimes impossible to arrange.

To be approved as a family link short breaks carer you do not need any special qualifications, you don’t need to have a spare room or have children of your own.

We welcome people from:

  • all backgrounds
  • religions
  • cultures
  • and marital status.

You will need some understanding of what it means to have a child with a disability and to have the energy and commitment to make a difference.

You do not have to live in our borough, but preferably not be too far away so that transport can be easily managed.

Could you offer a few hours after school or at week-ends; overnight stays or longer periods during the school holidays?

We will offer you:

  • Ongoing support from a named supervising social worker.
  • Training opportunities to develop your skills and a chance to volunteer at a local resource for children with disabilities.
  • Any equipment you need to offer a safe environment to a child.
  • Expenses for the number of hours you care for a child and any mileage costs.

If you think you may be interested please pick up the phone and we will be happy to answer your questions.
