Behaviour Support Teams
Haringey Behaviour Support Teams (HBST) (Primary and Secondary) work within the framework of the Haringey Children and Young People's Strategic Plan 2009 - 2020 'Better Futures' and adhere to the Children's Trust vision and the five outcomes of 'Every Child Matters' together with Haringey’s priorities to tackle each outcome listed below:
- be healthy
- stay safe
- enjoy and achieve
- make a positive contribution
- achieve economic well-being.
HSBT's purpose
HBST work as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team across all three Children's Networks (North, South and West). The purpose of the HBST (Primary and Secondary) is to advocate for some of Haringey’s most vulnerable children and young people in order to get the support that they need and for them to be able to enjoy the same opportunities that other children and young people in Haringey enjoy.
We want children to have consistent seamless care as they grow and move through the system. Professionals at all stages of a child's life will share responsibility and we will put children at the centre of all we do.
We aim to reduce exclusions and to promote inclusion of all children in mainstream Haringey schools. In order to achieve this, we work with children, school staff, parents/carers and other professionals as part of the 'team around the child' and implement a range of strategies for including children at risk of disaffection and/or exclusion.
Referring a child
Schools can refer children to our teams by completing a Common Assessment Framework (CAF) referral form which is then considered by the CAF Panel. We also support children who have Social Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties highlighted as a prime need in their Statement of Special Educational Needs.
How HSBT works
A major focus of our intervention is to increase the skills, confidence social and emotional awareness of children through group, whole class and individual work. We work in partnership with school staff and other professionals in order to increase the children’s ability to manage their own behaviour through teaching and modelling a range of appropriate strategies.
At the same time, we aim to work with staff in order to increase capacity through empowering them and enhancing their skills, confidence and strategies for managing challenging behaviour presented by classes and/or individual children.
We offer some central and school-based training to schools on promoting inclusion and emotional literacy as well as dealing with issues around behaviour, bullying and discrimination as well as domestic violence.
