Supplementary and community language schools
Haringey Council values and recognises the important role that both supplementary and community language schools have played over the years in improving educational standards, promoting social inclusion, and building children’s cultural identity and self-esteem to ensure that they get the best from learning.
Haringey Council is committed to supporting its schools by striving to meet the following objective:
|Back to top‘To support and promote partnerships between mainstream, supplementary, and community language schools to ensure that children and young people from black and minority ethnic communities are better supported to reach their full potential.’
Choosing a Supplementary School
We advise parents to carry out their own research to determine which school is right for their child. Parents may wish to carry out the following checks to aid their decision:
- Talk to the school's Headteacher or coordinator to determine if the school meets your child's academic or creative needs. E.g. the timetabled lessons/activities are appropriate.
- If the school teaches mother tongue languages, check that they are taught to a nationally recognised and accredited level. If not, does the school plan to obtain accreditation?
- Have a walk around the school, look at the facilities, and see where your child/children will be taught and where they will play.
- Ask to observe lessons and/or activities.
- Check the school has up to date child protection, health and safety, disciplinary, complaints, and equal opportunities policies, and that a member of staff is responsible for child protection issues and first aid.
- Check that all the staff working directly with children are either Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checked or supervised by staff who have been CRB checked.
- Ask if parents and young people are consulted and involved in the planning and decision-making processes within the school.
- Finally, talk to other parents and children attending the school about their experiences of the school.
Please see the supplementary and community language document (PDF, 248KB) for a list of the schools in Haringey. The London Borough of Haringey wishes to point out that it does not maintain or formally inspect all of the supplementary and community language schools included in this directory. The inclusion of a school should not therefore be taken as an endorsement. It is important that parents and carers satisfy themselves that a particular school is appropriate for their child.
