Faith in Education

Faith is a powerful element of both personal and community identity.

We are delighted to commend the Haringey Faith in Education web presence to you.

Haringey is rich in diversity and this web presence celebrates that diversity and encourages all young people and adults in our schools and communities to know and understand each other’s cultural heritages including their faith.

Communities living and learning alongside each other are of vital importance.

This web presence gives important information to help all communities understand and value each other whatever their belief and background.

Our aim is to encourage community cohesion and to reduce discrimination on the grounds of faith.

The web presence is the culmination of a great deal of hard work by officers and members of the local faith communities.

In particular we would like to acknowledge the work of Denise Chaplin, School Improvement Officer for Religious Education and Leon Joseph, Equalities Officer in putting together the information for this web presence.

Haringey’s Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) includes members from all the major faith groups in Haringey together with teachers and representatives of Haringey Council.

They work together to support and advise schools on:

  • Religious Education
  • collective worship
  • and the promotion of inclusion.

We hope that this information will support your work in schools and in the community. If you have suggestions for improvement we would be very pleased to receive them.

Haringey contains a very vibrant multi-faith community.

As chair of Haringey SACRE it is my privilege to work with members of the six main faith communities.

In SACRE we support schools in teaching pupils about different religions.

It is important that pupils understand and have an opportunity to develop and express their own attitude to living in a multi-faith community.

Stereotypes based on religion can cause insecurity and discrimination, as in the cases of anti-Semitism and Islamaphobia.

Such attitudes must be addressed if pupils of all faiths are to feel an equal sense of belonging and if they are to enjoy equal security in all situations.

All the major faiths promote equality and respect for others as a fundamental value.

Religious education makes a significant contribution to inter-faith understanding. Haringey SACRE is committed to promoting religious education that encourages social and racial harmony in Haringey.

“I think pupils should respect each other and each other’s beliefs then we can have world peace” a 12 year old Hindu pupil.

I warmly support the Haringey Faith in Education web presence as a resource for schools to use in teaching pupils to learn from religions and to encourage them to recognise the diversity of faith in Haringey.
