Holocaust Memorial Day

2013 Theme - Progress with Humanity

Progress with Humanity is Haringey’s little known motto and the flavour of this sentiment suits the emotion behind this year’s events. Following the death of Roman Halter in January 2012, the Holocaust Memorial Working Party unanimously decided that 2013 Holocaust Memorial events should be a celebration of his life. Roman Halter was an inspirational man and the Working Party wanted to involve as many groups of people as possible in a variety of diverse projects.

2013 Events

  • 'The Windermere Boys' - this exhibition took place at the Original Gallery, Hornsey Library, N8
  • In August 1945 a group of Jewish children who came to be known as the 'Windermere Boys' arrived to stay on the Calgarth Estate near Windermere. This exhibition tells the story of the 300 Jewish children, survivors of the Holocaust, who touched down on Crosby-on-Eden airfield near Carlisle in August 1945. They had been transported to the UK for recuperation and were to stay in hostel accommodation provided for them on the now 'lost' wartime village of Calgarth Estate which stood near Windermere. These children later found homes around the country and one of these boys was Roman Halter.

  • The annual multi faith event at Bruce Castle Museum and official opening of Holocaust Memorial Garden took place on Sunday 27 January
  • Heartlands High School, N22 - Progress through Humanity an inter-schools public speaking competition

Haringey Working Group

Sculpture by Claudia Holder and Paul Margetts in the Holocaust Memorial Garden, Bruce Castle, Tottenham.

Haringey Council commemorates Holocaust Memorial Day by working with local councillors, Holocaust survivors, community religious representatives and council officers who form the Holocaust Memorial Day Working Group.

Since it was formed the Working Group has developed in partnership with Haringey Council a number of projects such as creating the Holocaust Memorial Garden of Remembrance, creating a sculpture for the garden and has brought the Anne Frank, Kindertransport and Janusz Korzak exhibitions to Haringey. In 2011 Bruce Castle Museum hosted an exhibition of paintings by Sylvia Olipitz Gaylor (Pergosh) of some local Holocaust survivors.

What we did in 2012

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 (27 January) was 'Speak Up, Speak Out'. This theme asked us to think about the rights, responsibility and duty we all have to speak up when we see or hear something which we believe to be wrong.

Events included:

  • A multi-faith commemorative gathering at Bruce Castle Museum
  • An exhibition of art by Hungarian Holocaust survivor Moshe Galili at the European Commission, London, SW1
